Created for the 2015 CSE Expo, the Strandbeest uses a mechanism developed by Dutch artist-engineer Theo Jansen to create an 8-foot-tall pedal-powered walking vehicle. Specifically, Jansen developed a mechanism to convert the motion of a rotating crankshaft into a linear walking mechanism. We demoed this feat of engineering to hundreds of middle school students at the 2015 CSE Expo, instilling awe and sparking interest in STEM fields.
